Who is Alexis Morgan?

Alexis (Lexi) Morgan is a current student at Seattle Pacific University. She is majoring in Sociology, minoring in Communications, and a coxswain for the women’s crew.

I am originally from Aurora, CO and graduated from Cherokee Trail High School in 2022. I applied to multiple schools in Colorado, Washington, and California, but my heart was set on Washington. Originally I applied to Northwest University in Kirkland as well as Western Washington in Bellingham. After early acceptance to both schools, I made the last minute decision to apply to Seattle Pacific University. Once I went on my official campus tour I knew that SPU was the place for me, and was enrolled Autumn 2022.

When I first decided to come to SPU I declared my major as social justice and cultural studies. My first year I took Introduction to social justice and introduction to sociology, both of which were really interesting courses. However after sitting in my first sociology class, I was hooked. I changed my major to be sociology and haven’t looked back since, my main areas of interest being intersections between gender and race. Autumn of 2023 I took my first communications class, and that’s when I decided on a minor in communications.

Outside of the classroom a majority of my time is spent in the SPU Shellhouse. My whole life I have been involved in sports and extracurricular activities and college is no exception. In high school I played lacrosse and I was a goalie all 4 years. When I came out to Washington and realized that lacrosse was not offered at the collegiate level, I thought that was the end of my athletic journey. Little did I know that rowing would soon have my heart. I tried out for the women’s rowing team alongside a friend I made in the first week of school. We stuck with it for the 2 week long tryout period, and at the end of the 2 weeks we found out that we had made the roster. Our original tryout group was 30 and only 14 of us made it. After making the team, I found myself in the coxswain seat. Every day has been an opportunity to learn more and to grow into the shoes of the coxswains before me.

I have no idea what I want to do after I graduate college. I imagine that I will stay in Washington, probably the greater Seattle area, and maybe get a place of my own. I have always known that I would have a career that works closely with people- I call them “people professions”. My hope is that I find a space that gives me room to build relationships with people where I can connect with them deeply and authentically.

I am currently working as a student ambassador for SPU Admissions, which has opened me up to the idea of working at an institution of higher learning. I have built a skill set around knowledge of the school, leading tours, and connecting with prospective families. I have also had the opportunity to sit on student-faculty panels and engage in conversations around student life on campus. I am still trying to figure everything out, but I know that I have time.
